Coyote is an important figure in Navajo mythology. He represents both good and evil, human and god, and (of course) he's an animal. A shapeshifter and trickster, Coyote is unpredictable and ambivalent. He is a shadowy figure who can be funny or fearsome. Coyote is greedy, vain, foolish, cunning and occasionally displays great power. By testing and pushing the limits of behavior Coyote demonstrates and reinforces ideals of harmony and order while embracing chaos and life.
Origin myths present Coyote as an ancient, existing from the beginning of time. He took Changing Bear as his wife and stole Water Buffalo's children for the first woman. The act that made Water Buffalo cause the great flood driving First Man and First Woman into the Fourth World (where the people now live).
