The hunter moved silently through the dense forest, his keen eyes scanning the shadows for movement. He had long learned that the wilds were simpler than the company of people. Out here, the rules were clear: hunt, survive, and thrive. There was no room for chatter, no patience for foolishness.
He paused, crouching behind a thicket as a herd of deer grazed just beyond a small clearing. His bow was already drawn, the arrow nocked and ready. He could feel the pulse of the earth beneath his feet, the rhythm of nature guiding his every breath. He never missed a shot.
Voices drifted through the trees behind him, breaking the sacred silence. A group of hunters approached, talking too loudly, their footsteps heavy and clumsy. He didn’t need to turn around to know they were amateurs—unfocused, arrogant, and careless. He could smell the booze on them from a distance, could hear the jokes and complaints they threw around, as if the forest was their playground.
One of them spotted him and called out, “Oi, you there! Join us. We’re gonna bag something big today!”
He didn’t respond. His focus was on the herd, his mind already calculating the perfect moment to release his arrow. The voices continued, grating on his nerves like sandpaper on raw skin.
“Hey! Are you deaf, mate?” another called, laughter in his tone, completely oblivious to the world around him.
The hunter’s fingers twitched, but not at his bowstring. He fought the urge to turn and put an arrow between their eyes. Instead, he let out a slow breath, calming the fire inside him.
Finally, the loudest of them pushed through the trees and came face to face with him. "What’s your problem, huh? Too good for us?"
Without a word, the hunter let his arrow fly, straight and true. The lead deer crumpled instantly, a clean kill. The others scattered into the forest, spooked by the perfect strike.
The loudmouth stood dumbfounded for a moment, eyes flicking from the fallen deer back to the hunter. “Oi, we were gonna—"
The hunter turned slowly, his eyes like cold steel. "You’re too loud. Too stupid. I don’t hunt with idiots."
He slung the deer over his shoulder and disappeared into the woods, leaving them gaping in his wake. The forest swallowed him again, where only those who respected its silence could survive. And that was how he preferred it—alone, with no one to slow him down or test his patience.
