Most Popular Mythic+ Group Comps (Week 2)

Hello again Mythic+ fans! In this weekly Data Dive series, we take a look at the top group compositions being used at the various keystone level thresholds.

For a quick reminder, here’s how the Mythic+ Affixes work in The War Within:

For our Data Dive, we’ll be looking at the most popular group compositions used for timed keystones completed for the following ranges:

KEYSTONE LEVELAFFIXES
+2 to +6 Xal’atath’s Bargain + Fortified or Tyrannical
+7 to +11 Challenger’s Peril
+12 and Up Xal’atath’s Guile + Fortified and Tyrannical

NOTE
We at    firmly believe that you can complete Mythic+ dungeons and achieve success with ANY group composition. We are providing this data for information purposes only, and not to advocate for any kind of meta. In fact, we’re known for Breaking the Meta as much as possible!

Table of Contents

Keystone Levels: +2 to +6

This graph shows the top 5 group compositions used during Week 2 for timed Keystones between levels +2 and +6, inclusive. This is the first threshold of keystones where the affixes faced are one of four possible Xal’atath’s Bargain (added at +2) and either Fortified or Tyrannical (alternating each week, added at +4). For the above graph, the affixes were Xal’atath’s Bargain: Oblivion and Fortified.

Similar to Week 1, the tank choices seem to be trending towards   Blood Death Knights,   Guardian Druids,   Protection Warriors with some   Vengeance Demon Hunters thrown in. At this level range, we are seeing very few   Protection Paladins, and even fewer   Brewmaster Monks. The story continues as it did last week for healers – Restoration Shamans are dominating the leaderboards. As you’ll see, this certainly does appear to be a trend!

For DPS, we see very similar numbers to Week 1, with Retribution Paladins,   Arcane Mages, and   Fury Warriors being used regularly.

Keystone Levels: +7 to +11

This graph shows the top 5 group compositions used during Week 2 for timed Keystones between levels +7 and +11, inclusive. This is the second threshold of keystones where the affixes faced are the same as the first level range, with the new addition of Challenger’s Peril. For the above graph, the affixes were Xal’atath’s Bargain: Oblivion, Fortified, and Challenger’s Peril.

Similar to the prior level range, we’re still seeing a pretty wide variety of tank specs being used, minus the continued lack of   Protection Paladins and   Brewmaster Monks. Healing also looks the same, with Restoration Shamans being the sole choice amongst the most popular group compositions.

DPS compositions are fairly similar, with   Retribution Paladins,   Frost Death Knights,
Fury Warriors, and   Arcane Mages seeing a lot of play. Furthermore, we continue to see Assassination Rogues and   Marksmanship Hunters climb higher in the popular group comps in this level range.

Keystone Levels: +12 and Up

This graph shows keystones completed at levels +12 and up, which is where the affix situation changes dramatically. Xal’atath’s Bargain gets removed and replaced with
Xal’atath’s Guile, which removes the beneficial aspects of the affix and makes enemies 20% more difficult. Challenger’s Peril remains, and additionally both Fortified and   Tyrannical are present. At +12 and up, Mythic+ dungeons do not change from week to week, so their difficulty remains the same. It will be very interesting to see how these statistics change as the Season progresses!

In Week 1, there were only 30 dungeons in total completed at +12 and higher, as they are immensely difficult. As players accrue more gear, we will see this number continue to rise. At the time of publication, we have a total of 429 dungeons completed in-time at this range, including the first +14 timed of the Season! Wow!

The differences in the +12 and up range compared to lower keystone thresholds is evident from the onset, especially in the DPS category. Augmentation Evokers, a staple in high-key pushing from Dragonflight after the spec’s introduction, continue to dominate the high-key scene. They bring significant utility to both survivability and damage amplification, which becomes very important at this level. Mages (both Frost and Arcane) continue to be prevalent, as well as Frost Death Knights, but an interesting development in Week 2 is the increase in Shamans – both Elemental and Enhancement.

As is clear to see, Restoration Shamans are still the healer of choice, with a (small) smattering of Preservation Evokers and Mistweaver Monks.

Keep in mind that this continues to be a very small sample size due to it being so early in the Season!

Keystone Levels: +12 and Up (Overall Season)

As the affixes for keystone levels +12 and up do not change from week to week, we will be including the above graph each week in this Data Dive to show the top 5 group compositions for this level range for the Season Overall. It will be interesting to see how this particular graph changes as the Season progresses!

Insights

As not much has changed from Week 1 to Week 2, we wanted to take a closer look at why Restoration Shaman is currently so incredibly prevalent in Mythic+ group compositions. This is a topic that was recently discussed on social media, and there were some very solid theories and opinions as to why Restoration Shaman is so useful, especially at the higher keystone levels. It boils down mostly to the fact that they bring a substantial amount of utility while also being able to maintain the high HPS levels required of the highest dungeons.

This small thread of tweets from Tettles does a very good job of concisely explaining the value of Restoration Shaman:

On top of the HPS capabilities, the ever-important Ancestral Vigor buff, and the raid-wide Skyfury buff that Tettles mentions, Shamans also have a rather absurd amount of additional utility that can come in handy in dungeons. This includes Capacitor Totem, a 12-second Ranged Kick ( Wind Shear), Earthbind Totem (to kite mobs), and more. Not to mention the spec-specific benefits such as Earth Shield and Spirit Link Totem. Restoration Shamans also have great DPS profiles, especially for AoE.

The class-wide buffs and utility may also be contributing to the rise of DPS Shamans showing up in the highest dungeons, on top of the fact that they actually do very high amounts of damage – especially in AoE situations.

While it’s only Week 2, we foresee Shamans to continue to be the most prevalent healer in weeks to come, especially in the higher keystone groups. When gear levels and dungeon familiarity increase, and thus survivability and defensive utility is no longer as important, it’s possible we’ll see the other healer specs used more often, especially those that bring more Damage or Damage Amplification.

Stay tuned for more Data Dives, coming soon!
